Ricochet is experimental (it says so right in the github readme) and is no longer in active development. The author has moved on to develop Cwtch.

Always liked the idea, but the project is discontinued. Now we have Briar (same idea but mobile) which will get a desktop client soon.

Oh I didn’t know that.
I was also looking for a ricochet alternative but unfortunately Briar today still does not have any windows/linux client. Still looking for a TOR instant messaging P2P that is safe.
i actually don’t mind using experimental and/or unmaintained software , buuuuut… i’ve never met anyone else that has ricochet installed lols
for alternatives Tox is P2P and allows you to set a socks proxy in the settings menu so you can use Tor with it to make sure your IP never shows 
The only thing with Tox is that the iOS version is now unmaintained 
Retroshare is another P2P client with Tor built into it and all you need to do is press the Tor button in the app ^_^, buut… there is no iOS version for this at the moment
Ricochet may live on, someone has forked and updated it.
